about Raising a Girl to the World INC
My name is Theresa, and I’m reaching out with a heartfelt request and an inspiring story.
I went to Africa in 2023, I fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting Africa, where I had the extraordinary experience of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It was a life-changing journey, not only because of the breathtaking wildlife but also because of the profound impact it had on my understanding of the world. During my visit, I witnessed the harsh realities that many Ugandan families face every day. I saw entire families working in quarries, breaking rocks into gravel, earning just $20 for a week’s work. It was heart-wrenching.
Determined to make a difference, I spoke with my guide, who introduced me to his daughter, Moureen. She had established a small school to teach women sewing skills and basic business knowledge. Her goal? To help women create their own livelihoods and support their families. It was then that I realized I wanted to be a part of this transformative effort.
As a professional seamstress, I wanted to contribute by donating a treadle sewing machine and some fabric to Moureen’s school. However, I quickly learned that her school needs much more support. With only four sewing machines, Moureen has to schedule classes in multiple shifts, and the school often lacks fabric and other materials. Furthermore, children can’t attend school without uniforms and supplies, meaning they often stay home to work with their families, perpetuating a cycle of poverty that is difficult to break.
That’s why I’m reaching out to you. Together, we can help teach, learn, and grow this incredible initiative. By providing additional resources such as sewing machines, fabrics, and educational supplies, we can empower these women and children, giving them the tools they need to build a better future.
Thank you for visiting our site and for considering supporting this cause. Your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of many Ugandan families. Let’s join hands to create lasting change and brighter futures.
With gratitude, Theresa
Moureen Akankunda
I am 27 years old. I am single. How I made my money to start this business.
After my studies at the YMCA. I got a contract with Uganda Red Cross Society where I was working as a Volunteer. I earned some money from them. I used that money to buy the machines and to sustain myself as a girl. I also sew some clothes and display them for people to buy. I even do some farming as a source of some income, but that is seasonal.
I chose to do this for the women because most women in our community face violence by their husbands and a lot of the girls drop out of school due to early pregnancy. and they live in very poor conditions with their kids.
I had a dream to help women to be able to sustain themselves. Then they can become financially independent and support them to get food and feed their children, earn some money while learning new skills.
